For twenty-two years, I taught economics to teenagers. Every summer, my family returned to Parksville Beach — and every time I felt the ocean breeze, something in me softened.

Nine years ago, a small boutique became available near the coast. My husband Tom looked at me across the kitchen table.

He didn’t have to say a word.

I handed in my notice, we moved to Vancouver Island, and I opened Marys Parksville Beach.

Now I’m sixty-three, and it’s time to retire.
